Teaching kids how to ride a bike is not just fun; it teaches them to become independent. Apart from the basics of riding, you should also teach them about safety rules and help them develop their traffic skills. 

1. Choose the right bike size for your kid.

In addition to being difficult to control, a bike that is too big can also be uncomfortable and unsafe. Your child should be able to comfortably stand up with two feet on the ground when straddling the top bar of the bike. Use a bike sizing guide to help you purchase the right bicycle.

Your child’s riding ability should also be considered when choosing a bike. It may be confusing for them to ride bikes with lots of gears to change speeds. Space heaters are a popular way to stay warm during cold winter months or cool autumn afternoons, but they can be dangerous. Every year, space heaters cause fires that result in injuries and deaths. The National Fire Protection Agency estimates that space heaters cause 43% of house fires due to heating elements resulting in 85% of heating fire deaths.

Most modern heaters now have many safety features and certifications from independent bodies about their safety. However, it’s still essential to follow basic safety rules when using portable space heaters. Following these rules would also help you baby-proof your house and ensure overall protection from your kids and the rest of your family.

Are Space Heaters Safe?

Space heaters are used to heat a small to medium-size space using different technologies. However, unlike central heating, they can’t heat connected rooms. To make them effective, they are best used for closed spaces. 

Space heaters are generally electric heaters, but propane space heaters use liquid propane to produce heat. In the past, fireplaces were used to keep a space warm,  but today, modern space heaters use electricity. 

Here are the types of electric space heaters:

  • Ceramic Heaters: electricity heats ceramic plates to produce radiant or convective heat. 
  • Oil Heaters: these work the same way as ceramic heaters, except they use oil to conduct heat

When using portable heaters, it’s best to follow the following basic safety practices.

1. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reduce the fire risk.

Different types of heaters have different instructions for the optimal way to use them. Check the manual before operations and follow these safety instructions. 

2. Place the heater on the floor in the room you’ll use most.

If you’re using it in the bedroom, ensure the heat reaches your bed quickly. However, never put it on top of any other surface, especially fabric, wood, or plastic surfaces, unless it’s specifically manufactured as a tabletop heater. When placing it on the floor, don’t put it on top of a rug. 

3. Follow the three-foot rule when deciding where to place your heater.

Your heater must be three feet away from flammable objects like curtains, clothing, bed sheets, and other furniture. Always place the heater on a flat surface away from any flammable materials.

4. Ensure the heater is plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Never use an extension cord or power strip. Use a sturdy cord; don’t run it under rugs or carpeting. A loose or damaged cord is the usual cause of a faulty heater. 

5. Turn off the heater when no one actively uses it.

This includes when you leave the room or fall asleep. Leaving the item unattended can cause the heating equipment to overheat and lead to a fire. 

6. Opt for built-in safety features.

Look for space heaters with built-in overheat protection and automatic shut-off, so they’d turn off in case of overheating. Some heaters also have tip-over switches, so they’d shut down when accidentally tipped. Overheating and tipping are the common reasons why heaters cause house fires.

7.  Never place space heaters near water.

Space heaters differ from water heaters and should never be placed in damp spaces like bathrooms and kitchens. Avoid touching it when you’re wet as this could cause electric shock. 

8. Always unplug when you’re no longer using it.

If you don’t use a space heater for some time, don’t just turn it off. Completely unplug the device and keep it away. It will prevent curious kids or pets from playing with the item and anyone from accidentally tripping over it.  

Be Safe When Using Space Heaters

Remember that space heaters are designed only to provide supplemental heat. Never use these heaters to warm linens, cook food, or dry laundry. If you can afford central heating, then go for it.

Space heaters are not energy efficient, and they are not wise for long-term heating solutions. Most space heaters consume 400 to 1,500 watts which can be pretty energy intensive.

Finding more eco-friendly yet efficient ways to travel and get to places is a constant element in everyday living. From running errands to going to work, commuting or driving a car, especially a smart car to get most of these done in a day is always a smart option.

However, as smart cars become very popular, we face another surge in oil prices, their popularity resumes. However, everyone’s wondering: are Smart Cars safe? Let’s find out. 

Smart Cars Manufacturer

German car manufacturer, Mercedez-Benz, is the company behind Smart Cars. Originally, it was designed by Nicolas Hayek, the famous inventor of Swatch watches, to serve as a fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly in-city vehicle. But when initial sales were slow, he sold the model to Daimler-Benz, the German maker famous for Mercedes-Benz cars.

Mercedez-Benz is known for creating impressive and safe vehicles, and being the manufacturer of Smart Cars; then you’d get the reputation of a known car manufacturer as a guarantee. 

Smart Cars Impressive Features

Smart cars measure only 8 feet long and 5 feet wide which is half the size of traditional cars. The ForTwo model carries only two passengers, making it perfect for running errands and quickly getting around the city. 

The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates the car’s fuel efficiency for city driving at 32 mpg (miles per gallon). If you drive it on the highway, the fuel efficiency is at 39 mpg. You may think it’s impressive, but many compact cars now surpass those numbers. However, ForTwo has released hybrid and fully electric versions that can further address rising fuel prices. 

What makes these vehicles truly impressive is their size. You can easily fit three ForTwo models in a single parallel parking spot, making it the winner in the battle for parking. 

But are they safe?

Smart Cars Safety Ratings

Looking at these small cars cruising the streets, most people are curious about their safety. They look cute and fuel-efficient, but are they safe, and should we trust them? 

For some people, safety means the car must have the latest technology, such as blind-spot monitoring and modern conveniences. However, the best test of car safety is a crash-test rating. 

Agencies like the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) conduct crash tests on vehicles and release safety ratings to guide the public on what they should expect. They gave the ForTwo Smart Car a rating of 4 out of 5 for frontal, side, and rollover crashes. 

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a US non-profit agency conducting crash test ratings, has given the Smart Car 3 out of 5 stars for adult occupant protection. They also gave “Good” ratings for front and side crash protection. 

Professional agencies and independent curious creators have given these cars a trial run and certified their safety.

Smart Cars Safety Features

Why are these cars safe? First, they were created with a Tridion Steel Safety Cell, which acts as a strong cage surrounding the car’s occupants. This hemispherical cage is made of pure, hard steel, making it impossible to crumble or crush. In case of a crash, distortions are prevented, keeping everything inside intact. 

The car’s crumple zone, located at the car’s front, absorbs all the kinetic energy from an accidental impact. So while that front is crumpled, you can rest easy that the insides are intact.

Other safety features include anti-lock brakes, side and knee airbags, and intelligent seatbelts that detect motion changes. The smart car outperforms larger vehicles in gas mileage and safety, considering it’s only a 1500-pound vehicle. 

Despite their size, larger vehicles are generally safer than smaller ones. Small cars are subject to more force in an accident than their larger counterparts. So if safety is your top priority, a mini car might not be your best option. 

Should You Buy A Smart Car?

Before making your decision, determine what is more important for you. Is it safety or economy? What would you use the car for? If you are an eco-conscious consumer and after the economy in fuel prices, this vehicle will be a good secondary car that you can use to run errands in the city. It’s also relatively safe and can protect you when driving, whether in the city or in the highway. 

However, most people are still apprehensive about driving smart vehicles on the highway. Also, despite the crash test ratings, we can’t argue that larger vehicles are better than tiny ones. While they occupy more space on the road, they can hold more and provide better protection for the riders in the event of accidental crashes. 

At the end of the day, the choice is yours. What features do you value, and what is your goal for getting another car? While a Smart Car may not be everyone’s choice, especially as a primary car, it can be a good second car for those quick trips around the city.

Understanding safety rules, and traffic controls, and taking precautions will help you avoid any accidents due to cycling.

How To Ride Safely

Cyclists should follow the same traffic rules that vehicles and pedestrians should. They need to stay in bike lanes and move when the green light says go. However, there are special riding precautions every cyclist should take to avoid any bicyclist deaths.

Pre-Drive Cyclist Safety

  1. Inspect your bicycle before riding. Seats should be at the proper height, and all gears must be working. Tires should be inflated properly.
  2. Front and rear lights must be working, and keep a spare just in case. It’s recommended to have white lights in front and red lights at the rear.
  3. Adding a horn or bell and a rearview mirror is also recommended. A bell will help you warn any nearby pedestrians and other motorists. A rear-view mirror helps you check what’s behind you before you make any left or right turns.
  4. Wear bright clothing, such as a neon jacket, to help drivers see you on the road.

  3. Stay alert for traffic signals and use hand signals to let motorists know where you’re turning especially if you are at intersections. Use pedestrian signals as needed. 
  4. Watch out for pedestrians and try to make eye contact to make sure they saw you. If there’s no eye contact, assume they didn’t see you and be ready to brake or steer.
  5. If the traffic is at a standstill, you can ride past stationary vehicles. However, overtaking a moving vehicle is never advised because bicycles travel at slower speeds than other motorists. 
  6. When riding through a parking lot or near parked vehicles, give ample room from doors to avoid being hit in case of doors accidentally opening. “Dooring” is a common bicycle accident because cyclists are often in the blind spot of the driver or passenger opening the door. Check if the parked vehicle is also about to leave so you can anticipate any movements and make adjustments accordingly. 
  7. Avoid passing a vehicle on the left side because this is the driver’s blind spot and a common cause of being hit resulting in severe injuries.
  8. Always be on the lookout for potential hazards like puddles, debris, and potholes. If you’re riding in a group, call out when you see any hazards to alert the other cyclists.

Adults, especially females, also use this powder on their genitals to reduce odors. It’s also helpful in easing rashes or reducing friction on other body parts. Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder has been a popular choice for parents wanting to keep their baby’s skin dry and soft.

However, recent controversy has risen over the potential health risks of using the product. As a result, the company has stopped selling the famous powder in the US and Canada and will soon permanently pull it out of shelves worldwide.

Understanding The Controversy

Studies in the 1970s suggested a correlation between the long-term use of talc-based products and ovarian cancer. The females in the study described using Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based baby powder in their genitals.

While there is no strong evidence of talc powder cancer risks, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the company by women diagnosed with the disease. It is alleged that Johnson & Johnson knew about the potential link between talcum powder and cancer but failed to warn consumers.

As a result, many women are now suing the company, with some winning their lawsuits. Another significant issue is the presence of small amounts of asbestos, a known carcinogen, in these talc powders. Asbestos is a natural mineral present near mineral reserves where talc is mined.

Exposure to asbestos through inhalation is known to cause lung cancer. Johnson & Johnson denies that their products contain asbestos, and product tests have shown zero detectable amounts of the questionable mineral.

While the jury is still out on whether or not talcum powder is hazardous, the controversy has led many parents to reconsider using the product. As sales dwindled, Johnson & Johnson decided to recall their talc-based powders.

Other Alternatives To Consider

Most pediatricians don’t recommend using any form of powder near babies. No matter how safe the ingredients are, inhaling powders can cause respiratory failure in very young children (such as infants). If you need to use powder, avoid putting it directly on babies and shake it away from their faces.

Instead of talcum powder, use arrowroot powder or cornstarch powder. Other alternatives to talc powder are oat flour and baking soda. You can also opt for a diaper cream to prevent diaper rash. 

Is Talcum Powder Bad?
