To keep your cameras safe from hackers:

  1. Choose a router with Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) security, which encrypts your data.
  2. Enable your cameras’ built-in firewall, which monitors and controls information coming to and from the camera. Instructions for doing so will be included with your cameras.
  3. Protect your cameras with a strong password. If your cameras come with default passwords, change them immediately.
  4. Protect your Wi-Fi router with a strong password (different from the ones for your cameras).

Can Home Security Cameras be Hacked?

Any device connected to the internet can be hacked, and that includes home security cameras. Wired cameras are less vulnerable than Wi-Fi cameras, and those with local storage are less vulnerable than cameras that store video on a cloud-based server. However, all cameras can be hacked. This could allow someone to watch you, listen to you, and record your activities without your knowledge. They also potentially could access any other devices on your home networks, such as your computer or smartphone.

“All security cameras are vulnerable,” says Arup Mukherjee, a software engineer for 25 years and founder of Camect, a smart network video recorder designed to make security cameras more secure. “The brand of camera and how it is set up on the network are the most important risk factors. Some manufacturers are more security-conscious than others, and most of the risk of having a home security camera can be mitigated if you take appropriate precautions on your network.”

Most home security camera hacks aren’t the fault of the camera company. They usually happen because homeowners used the same password on another site and that database was breached, or because they didn’t change the default password on the camera when they bought it. This is what Ring alleges happened in the well-publicized case of the Ring camera in a young girl’s bedroom that was hacked.

Sometimes, however, it is the manufacturer’s fault. Cloud-based security cameras store their footage on a server, and hackers can attempt to infiltrate those systems to access that footage directly. They’re more likely to succeed if the camera company doesn’t implement good security practices. “Some cameras work with a cloud service and send all of your video data to the cloud,” Mukherjee says. “This type of camera is also vulnerable to hacking of the cloud service or theft of your video data from your cloud service, even if the hackers cannot directly connect to the cameras on your home network.”

This is why you should only purchase security cameras from well-known companies. “Look for a brand that’s been around for years and that you know and that has as many positive reviews as possible,” says Jordan Frankel, vice president of security consulting firm Global Security Experts Inc. You don’t want to leave the security of your camera footage in the hands of a company you don’t trust. In that case, it doesn’t matter how strong the password of your Wi-Fi router is. “They have access to see your footage because it’s on their servers,” Frankel says.

Setting strong, unique passwords is hard, and coming up with a new one for every service you use is virtually impossible. But you should never reuse passwords, as this is how most home security cameras get hacked. More than 65 million passwords have been accessed by hackers due to company data breaches at large organizations such as Equifax, Marriott, and Capital One and published on the web for anyone to see. So, if you use the same password for evite.com as you do for your home security camera, you’re making yourself vulnerable. The easiest way to set strong passwords is to use a password manager that generates long, strong passwords for you, which you never have to remember. Well-known, trusted password managers include 1Password and LastPass. These companies have apps and browser extensions you can use to generate new passwords, store them, and then fill them in on your smartphone, computer, or tablet when needed.

An alternative is to write your passwords down in a physical notebook (not in a Word file or Google spreadsheet, which can also be hacked). If you go this route, you’ll need to create your own passwords. The Electronic Frontier Foundation suggests using a set of dice and a list of at least six words to create a strong password phrase. A passphrase is a password made up of a string of words instead of random characters and is therefore much longer than most passwords. The longer a password is, the harder it is to guess. Even though random characters and symbols may seem more secure, shorter passwords are more easily guessable by computer programs than longer ones.

A good password should:

  • Be long (a minimum of 12 characters, although longer is better)
  • Use a combination of numbers, symbols, and upper and lower case letters
  • Never use personally identifiable information, such as a street you live on, your birthday, or your email address
  • Never be reused
  • Contain dictionary words as long as they don’t make sense (HasteStarryHelpRainBowBurnImp instead of CatInTheHat)

How Often Should I Change My Passwords?

If you have long, strong, secure passwords, changing them once a year is probably sufficient. Research has shown that being forced to change your passwords often actually makes people use weaker passwords. The National Institute of Standards and Technology changed its guidelines in 2017 to recommend that people not be required to change their passwords as frequently. But you should change your password if any of the following happen:

  • A service you use informs you of a security breach.
  • You suspect someone has attempted to access your account.
  • You find malware, ransomware, or other unauthorized software on one of your devices.
  • You logged into an account while using a public computer or while using an unsecured public Wi-Fi hotspot, such as at an airport or library.

Also known as two-step verification or 2FA, two-factor authentication is a security measure that verifies your identity by using an additional layer of security in addition to your password. This usually involves a separate device or second piece of information (often a one-time generated code) that you have to activate or enter before you can get into your account. The benefit of 2FA is that even if someone obtains or guesses your password, they still won’t be able to access your account.

When you set up 2FA on your account, you’ll be asked if you want a text message, phone call, or email to deliver these one-time codes. Alternatively, you can use an authenticator app. This is the safest method because hackers theoretically can intercept your text messages, phone calls, and emails). However, all of these methods are far better than not having 2FA set up at all.

To set up two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, follow these steps:

  1. Download an Authenticator app such as Authy or Google Authenticator.
  2. Open the account you want to secure.
  3. Go to Settings and look for the Security and Privacy section.
  4. Select “Set Up Two Factor Authentication” and follow the steps to secure your account.
  5. Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code provided or enter the details provided by the account you are setting up to connect it to the app.

The app will now ask for a one-time authentication code every time you log in, which you can retrieve from your authentication app by simply copying and pasting. If the app doesn’t offer the option of using an authenticator app choose text message, email or a phone call to receive your code.

Updating Your Cameras’ Firmware

Firmware is the software that runs your cameras. “Every security camera is a computer, just like your smartphone is a computer,” Mukherjee says. “The software on these cameras needs to be updated periodically with security updates to ensure that hackers cannot access your camera. Unfortunately, many cameras don’t get automatic software updates and can become vulnerable to hacking as people discover security holes. As a result, be sure to check for firmware updates periodically in the “Settings” section of your cameras’ mobile app. If a new version of the firmware is available, there will be an option to download and install it.

It’s always advisable not to put indoor cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms, or other explicitly private spaces. If you’re really afraid of being watched, unplug or physically cover the camera when you’re home. Consider opting for a camera that gives a physical indication when it is recording or in live view mode so that you can always tell at a glance if someone is watching.

If you are concerned that someone might use your wireless security cameras to exploit a vulnerability in your home network and gain access to other devices such as personal computers, consider setting up a separate network with a separate router for your cameras. “Where the camera network connects to your main network (e.g. at your router) set up rules to ensure that no unexpected communication can occur between your cameras and other devices on your home network, or between your cameras and unknown destinations on the internet,” Mukherjee says.

    Women are highly underrepresented in the field of cybersecurity. In 2017, women’s share in the U.S. cybersecurity field was 14 percent, compared to 48 percent in the general workforce.

    The problem is more acute outside the U.S. In 2018, women accounted for 10 percent of the cybersecurity workforce in the Asia-Pacific region, 9 percent in Africa, 8 percent in Latin America, 7 percent in Europe and 5 percent in the Middle East.

    Women are even less well represented in the upper echelons of security leadership. Only 1 percent of female internet security workers are in senior management positions.

    I study online crime and security issues facing consumers, organizations and nations. In my research, I have found that internet security requires strategies beyond technical solutions. Women’s representation is important because women tend to offer viewpoints and perspectives that are different from men’s, and these underrepresented perspectives are critical in addressing cyber risks.

    Perception, awareness and bias

    The low representation of women in internet security is linked to the broader problem of their low representation in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Only 30 percent of scientists and engineers in the U.S. are women.

    The societal view is that internet security is a job that men do, though there is nothing inherent in gender that predisposes men to be more interested in or more adept at cybersecurity. In addition, the industry mistakenly gives potential employees the impression that only technical skills matter in cybersecurity, which can give women the impression that the field is overly technical or even boring.

    Women are also generally not presented with opportunities in information technology fields. In a survey of women pursuing careers outside of IT fields, 69 percent indicated that the main reason they didn’t pursue opportunities in IT was because they were unaware of them.

    Organizations often fail to try to recruit women to work in cybersecurity. According to a survey conducted by IT security company Tessian, only about half of the respondents said that their organizations were doing enough to recruit women into cybersecurity roles.

    Gender bias in job ads further discourages women from applying. Online cybersecurity job ads often lack gender-neutral language.

    Good security and good business

    Boosting women’s involvement in information security makes both security and business sense. Female leaders in this area tend to prioritize important areas that males often overlook. This is partly due to their backgrounds. Forty-four percent of women in information security fields have degrees in business and social sciences, compared to 30 percent of men.

    Female internet security professionals put a higher priority on internal training and education in security and risk management. Women are also stronger advocates for online training, which is a flexible, low-cost way of increasing employees’ awareness of security issues.

    Female internet security professionals are also adept at selecting partner organizations to develop secure software. Women tend to pay more attention to partner organizations’ qualifications and personnel, and they assess partners’ ability to meet contractual obligations. They also prefer partners that are willing to perform independent security tests.

    Increasing women’s participation in cybersecurity is a business issue as well as a gender issue. According to an Ernst & Young report, by 2028 women will control 75 percent of discretionary consumer spending worldwide. Security considerations like encryption, fraud detection and biometrics are becoming important in consumers’ buying decisions. Product designs require a trade-off between cybersecurity and usability. Female cybersecurity professionals can make better-informed decisions about such trade-offs for products that are targeted at female customers.

    Attracting women to cybersecurity

    Attracting more women to cybersecurity requires governments, nonprofit organizations, professional and trade associations and the private sector to work together. Public-private partnership projects could help solve the problem in the long run.

    One example is Israel’s Shift community, previously known as the CyberGirlz program, which is jointly financed by the country’s Defense Ministry, the Rashi Foundation and Start-Up Nation Central. It identifies high school girls with aptitude, desire and natural curiosity to learn IT and and helps them develop those skills.

    The girls participate in hackathons and training programs, and get advice, guidance and support from female mentors. Some of the mentors are from elite technology units of the country’s military. The participants learn hacking skills, network analysis and the Python programming language. They also practice simulating cyber-attacks to find potential vulnerabilities. By 2018, about 2,000 girls participated in the CyberGirlz Club and the CyberGirlz Community.

    In 2017, cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks teamed up with the Girl Scouts of the USA to develop cybersecurity badges. The goal is to foster cybersecurity knowledge and develop interest in the profession. The curriculum includes the basics of computer networks, cyberattacks and online safety.

    Professional associations can also foster interest in cybersecurity and help women develop relevant knowledge. For example, Women in Cybersecurity of Spain has started a mentoring program that supports female cybersecurity professionals early in their careers.

    Some industry groups have collaborated with big companies. In 2018, Microsoft India and the Data Security Council of India launched the CyberShikshaa program in order to create a pool of skilled female cybersecurity professionals.

    Some technology companies have launched programs to foster women’s interest in and confidence to pursue internet security careers. One example is IBM Security’s Women in Security Excelling program, formed in 2015.

    Attracting more women to the cybersecurity field requires a range of efforts. Cybersecurity job ads should be written so that female professionals feel welcome to apply. Recruitment efforts should focus on academic institutions with high female enrollment. Corporations should ensure that female employees see cybersecurity as a good option for internal career changes. And governments should work with the private sector and academic institutions to get young girls interested in cybersecurity.

    Increasing women’s participation in cybersecurity is good for women, good for business and good for society.

    A home warranty covers service, repair, or replacement of your major home systems and appliances. It provides a financial buffer in case of a big-ticket item malfunction, and it can extend the protection of manufacturers’ warranties after they expire. The warranty company connects you with its affiliated contractors, so you can make one call for any problems with an appliance or system that’s covered by your plan and don’t need to find individual contractors on your own. A home warranty can also provide an allowance to help pay for replacement items.

    A home warranty is a consumer convenience product that you can purchase to mitigate the risk of incurring major out-of-pocket expenses if an appliance or system fails. A home warranty isn’t the same as homeowners insurance, which serves a different purpose. In general, homeowners insurance covers property damage from perils such as fire, theft, hail, wind, and vandalism. It also covers liability for injuries to guests on policyholders’ property.

    By contrast, a home warranty covers appliances and systems that malfunction and aren’t covered by homeowners insurance or a manufacturer’s warranty. At any time, no matter the age of your home or its condition, you can purchase a home warranty directly from a home warranty company. But most often, home warranties are purchased during a real estate transaction, either by the seller as an incentive for the buyer to close the deal or by the buyer for peace of mind.

    Ultimately, a home warranty is part of an overall protection program for your home, says Art Chartrand, executive director, and counsel for the National Home Service Contract Association (NHSCA). If an issue arises with an appliance or system that’s named in the contract, you can submit a service request, and the home warranty company will dispatch a contractor to diagnose, repair, and possibly replace the item. You pay a service fee that ranges from $30 to $125. The warranty company can decide to replace the item with a comparable alternative or provide a cash settlement based on the warranty company’s charge limits.

    Your home warranty will cover only what’s specifically named in the contract. Some home warranties cover appliances, while others cover major systems like heating and air conditioning. More comprehensive warranties cover both. You can purchase add-ons for a home warranty to cover smaller items like a sump pump, well pump, or septic tank.

    Ultimately, the best home warranty is one that meets your coverage needs based on the age and condition of your appliances and systems.

    Home warranties are worth it if your appliances no longer have manufacturers’ warranties, and if you want to reduce the out-of-pocket cost of repairing or replacing expensive items like a refrigerator, water heater, air conditioner, or furnace. A home warranty also can be a good idea if you’re selling your home and want added financial protection in case an item breaks down before closing. Also, a home warranty is worthwhile if you’re buying a home and want something that will help cover unexpected repair and replacement costs after you move in. The upshot is that if you own a home, there’s a good chance you could put a home warranty to use. According to the NHSCA, people with home warranties file an average of 1.5 claims per year.

    However, there are reasons why some feel home warranties aren’t worth it. “There’s a cost to manage risk,” says Nick Gromicko, founder of the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors. “That cost is exorbitant when it comes to home warranties.     The average cost of a one-year home warranty is $550, according to the NHSCA. Read the fine print to understand the exclusions, service visit fees, and charge limits. As with many products, you can buy home warranties with different levels of coverage, so don’t expect a Cadillac plan for a low price tag. “If you can buy a warranty for $15, it’s not going to cover anything,” Gromicko says.

    The most comprehensive home warranty plans from the companies we rated cost $510 to $675. As for service fees, those can range from $30 to $125. Some home warranty companies charge more for service fees but less for the annual home warranty plan.

    If you’re looking for a discount on a home warranty, some companies will charge less if you pay for an entire year upfront instead of opting for monthly installments. Alternatively, a warranty company might offer a bonus month for the same price as a year-long plan if you pay in full.

    Are Home Warranties Tax Deductible?

    If you buy a home warranty for your primary residence, it isn’t tax-deductible on your federal return. The same is true for homeowners insurance. However, if you use a part of your house for a home office, you can deduct a portion of the home warranty. And, if the home is a rental property, the IRS allows a deduction for the home warranty.

    Who Shouldn’t Get a Home Warranty?

    If your appliances still have active manufacturers’ warranties, you won’t need a home warranty for those items. In fact, home warranty companies state in their contracts that items already covered by manufacturers’ warranties are excluded from their plans. Moreover, if you know an appliance or system is malfunctioning, was improperly installed, violates code, or hasn’t been properly maintained, a home warranty won’t cover repairs for those items.

    A home warranty is beneficial for those who want financial protection in case appliances and systems malfunction when used as directed and after incurring typical wear and tear. Essentially, if a covered appliance that was in good working order stops working unexpectedly, a home warranty can reduce the out-of-pocket expenses you’ll pay to diagnose and repair or replace it.
